Under My Skin ;
Hello friends!
2020 has been looking real grim, hasn't it?
How is everyone holding up?
I hope you're all doing well and staying healthy still!
I've been working for home for officially 2 months today!
The last day i was in office was 3 April to be exact.
HAHA.
Oh how time flies!
I've been so used to working at my own time (sometimes even at midnight) and in my pyjamas, i'm not sure i'm ready to go back to the office and mingle with humans again!
But at the same time, i know i'm craving human interaction and just going out to walk around again.
While we're lucky enough to have Singapore's community cases hit 0 now, it's really unfortunate that the dormitories are still experiencing a high number of infections.
It's sort of a shock - we're so privileged, we didn't even realise the conditions that our foreign workers are living in.
They're all cramped up in a small space, and we call that a living space.
They work day in and out to contribute to our country's booming economy with minimal pay and yet there are some disgusting comments that were put up in response to the Government's intention to build more dormitories for them in the heartlands.
I believe the post has been circulated enough on Facebook, and if you're not awake enough to read and comprehend, or even understand why they're nasty, please read them again.
In light of #blacklivesmatter in America, i think it's time we looked at Singapore too.
As a middle-class Chinese, i think i'm in a similar position to the middle-class White in America.
While Singapore is more peaceful, i think this is just another ticking bomb that has yet to be touched and opened enough by the society for it to explode in our faces.
Sure - thanks to Singapore Government, we're not allowed to use violence even in our discrimination, but that does not make us any better!
Just because we do not hold guns to our foreign workers', friends', migrants' faces, doesn't mean that our words themselves do not serve as a bullet itself.
Just because we're not hurting them physically doesn't mean that we're not being racist!
Even though i know it's a really hard thing to come to terms with, but the reality is that we're still discriminating against some races in Singapore as well.
We still have so much room for improvement.
I admit - i'm not the most sensitive and i probably played a part in these when i was younger.
All our tradition seeped in mild racism that became a norm.
I think it's time for a change.
:)
As i grew older and saw more of the world, i realised my bias, and i hope that we can now try to make a difference and make things better for the future generation.
Not just in America, but let's try to treat everyone equally.
There's really only one race in all of this planet - Human Race.
We're all in this together, are we not?
Let's unite and fight against our wrong mindset that any of us is less than the others, just because of their skin colour, or religion, or nationality.
No freedom till we're equal. :)
I'm praying for everyone!
I hope today's fight will lead to a better tomorrow.
You matter as much as everyone else do!
But please don't think that you matter more than anyone else just because you were given a headstart in life thanks to your skin colour, race, or religion.
May this generation make days better for the future generations to come!
I love you so much - wherever you are, whoever you are.
Please be okay.
Joy
